Professional Profile

Dr. Carlos Alvarez is a general surgeon who performs a wide array of procedures, including hernia and hiatal hernia repairs, removal of intestinal tumors and appendectomy. He has extensive training and experience in managing pancreatitis with an innovative endoscopic technique using smaller incisions than traditional surgery.

Newer, smaller surgical instruments allow Dr. Alvarez to perform a variety of procedures with minimally-invasive techniques. “The small incisions allow patients to go home sooner and get back to their normal lives much quicker, with fewer long term complications such as hernias and adhesions that can lead to more operations,” says Dr. Alvarez.

Dr. Alvarez was drawn to practice at Doylestown Hospital because of the quality of care and the broad range of services that physicians are able to provide to patients close to home. “That environment gives me the confidence to continue to provide state-of-the-art surgical care to even the most complicated patients,” says Dr. Alvarez.

Personal Profile

Growing up in Cuba, where his father was the sole physician in his small town, Dr. Alvarez maintained an interest and passion for building and fixing everything from bikes to cars. “I always was into taking things apart and (eventually) getting them to work again,” says Dr. Alvarez.

Sadly, just before Dr. Alvarez finished high school, his mother passed away during a difficult operation to remove a tumor in her stomach. “As best as I can tell, that planted a tiny thought in my head to go into medicine and fix people so they would not suffer the same result,” says Dr. Alvarez. “Eventually, in medical school, I got exposed to surgery, and a brilliant surgeon who could do just about any operation, and do it better than most. I knew right away that’s who I wanted to be.”

Dr. Alvarez is a “soccer dad” and FC Barcelona fan who enjoys riding his bike and working in the yard.
