DOYLESTOWNMary Ellen Pelletier, MD, whose nearly 15-year career at Doylestown Hospital has encompassed many ground-breaking achievements, was elected by her peers to become President of the Doylestown Hospital Medical Staff. Dr. Pelletier assumed the leadership position on July 1, 2017.

Originally a member of the medical staff in private practice, Dr. Pelletier joined Doylestown as a hospitalist shortly after the program's inception. She quickly established herself as a patient safety and quality improvement advocate in her role as physician informaticist beginning in 2008. In that position, she helped lead the transition from paper to electronic medical records and was the first physician at Doylestown Hospital to admit a patient through the new CPOE (Computerized Physician Order Entry) system. She was also for a time the lead hospitalist.

Dr. Pelletier also chairs the Order Set Committee and, until recently, the Documentation Committee of the Medical Staff, and serves on the Doylestown Health Board of Director's Patient Safety Committee.

Coincidentally, Dr. Pelletier also becomes the first female president of the Doylestown Hospital medical staff.

"Dr. Pelletier is widely respected by nurses and physicians in addition to being an excellent clinician and physician leader," said Scott Levy, MD, Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Doylestown Health. "Her election as president is a natural progression in a career that has made a positive impact on so many people – patients and providers."

"It's an honor to be the first woman in this role," says Dr. Pelletier. "It's humbling that my colleagues would elect me.

"I'm actually a little surprised it has taken this long," she says. "There have been so many great women before me. I hope this opens the door for more women to take leadership positions."

During her tenure, Dr. Pelletier hopes to strengthen the cooperation between physicians and the nursing staff. The focus is influenced by the fact Dr. Pelletier's mother was a nurse. "In my opinion, they are an equally important part of the care team for my patients," she says. "I'd like to further develop an environment that fosters respect."

Dr. Pelletier is a member of the Doylestown Healthcare Partnership, the American Medical Association and the Pennsylvania Medical Society.

Dr. Pelletier and her husband have two children ages 11 and 14. She believes being a mother, wife and physician will serve her well in her new role. And she hopes to continue the legacy of the Village Improvement Association, a civic-minded women's organization that founded Doylestown Hospital in 1923.
