Doylestown Hospital Earns National Designations for Excellence in Cardiac Care

06/15/2018

DOYLESTOWN – Doylestown Hospital recently earned two national designations that affirm the quality of its cardiac program and the outstanding care it provides the community.

  • Chest Pain Center Accreditation with Primary PCI by the American College of Cardiology
  • The American Heart Association's Mission: Lifeline ® Heart Attack Receiving Accreditation

Earning dual accreditation for the Chest Pain program is a significant accomplishment that further establishes Doylestown Health as a leader in cardiac care both regionally and nationally.

"Working collaboratively with Emergency Medical Services, the Emergency Department and The Heart Institute, the team at Doylestown Health has achieved success in meeting the rigorous standards for dual accreditation. This achievement assures the highest level of care for all members of our community," says Doylestown Health Chief Operating Officer Eleanor Wilson.

Doylestown Hospital's state-of-the-art services encompass the entire continuum of care for the heart patient and include such focal points as Emergency Medical Services, the Emergency Department and cardiac catheterization lab, Doylestown Hospital's quality assurance plan, and community outreach program. By earning these national recognitions, Doylestown Hospital has enhanced the quality of care for the cardiac patient and demonstrated its commitment to the highest standards.

The American College of Cardiology recognized Doylestown Hospital's Woodall Chest Pain Center for its demonstrated expertise and commitment in treating patients with chest pain, based on rigorous onsite evaluation of the staff's ability to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack.

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), also known as coronary angioplasty, is a non-surgical procedure that opens narrowed or blocked coronary arteries with a balloon to relieve symptoms of heart disease or reduce heart damage during or after a heart attack. The Woodall Chest Pain Center, an extension of Doylestown Health's Heart and Vascular Services, works with local ambulance services to ensure rapid treatment for heart attack even before a patient arrives in the Emergency Department.

Hospitals that have earned ACC Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI Accreditation have proven exceptional competency in treating patients with heart attack symptoms and have primary PCI available 24/7 every day of the year. As required to meet the criteria of the accreditation designation, Doylestown Hospital has streamlined its systems from admission to evaluation to diagnosis and treatment all the way through to appropriate post-discharge care and recommendations and assistance in patient lifestyle changes. In addition, Doylestown Hospital has formal agreements with other facilities that regularly refer heart attack patients to its facility for primary PCI.

The American Heart Association's Mission: Lifeline® Heart Attack Receiving Accreditation Program recognizes centers that have demonstrated expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting stringent criteria. The Mission: Lifeline Heart Attack Receiving Accreditation can significantly reduce cardiac deaths by educating people on the early heart attack symptoms, reducing time for lifesaving treatment and increasing the accuracy and effectiveness of treatment.

Doylestown Health's Woodall Chest Pain Center, located at Doylestown Hospital, first received accreditation as a Chest Pain Center just after the new Emergency Department opened in 2010. Since then, teamwork between the Heart Institute and Emergency Department teams, as well as emergency medical personnel in the field, have further elevated the level of care. The focus continues to be early heart attack care, quick access to care, and community education to prevent cardiac deaths.
