From packing lunches to planning carpool routes, a mom's to-do list seems never ending. Finding alone time may seem nearly impossible. As busy as moms are, it's important to make sure they are taking care of their own health and wellbeing.
"As moms, we have a tendency to put everyone else's needs ahead of our own. It's really important that we take care of ourselves, mentally and physically," says Kathy Donahue, director of maternal and child services at Doylestown Health.
Here are nine tips for busy moms on the go:
Get enough sleep
Sacrificing your sleep schedule will make you more irritable, less energetic and more prone to infection. Aim for 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night to stay alert and creative throughout the day.
Wash your hands
Being diligent about hand hygiene will help guard against infection year-round. Hand washing is important during any season and it is important to educate your children on proper hygiene habits. Scrub your hands with soap and water for 15-20 seconds to strip away virus-causing bacteria and to prevent transmission to your children.
Parents and grandparents should be vaccinated in order to stop the spread of disease to their children and grandchildren who are too young to be immunized or fully protected. Moms-to-be should also seek appropriate vaccinations so that their children receive the same life-saving benefits. Make sure that your family is up-to-date on vaccines.
Sweat it out
Finding time to exercise with your family's busy schedule may seem daunting. However, squeezing in 30 minutes of solid exercise a few times per week will help keep you happy and healthy. To keep yourself on track, schedule your workout on your calendar and plan your routine in advance. Planning will not only help you to stay on track, but will also save you time at the gym. Don't want to find a babysitter? Find a gym with a childcare program so that working out can be hassle-free.
Eight glasses of water a day keeps the doctor away. Avoid the effects of dehydration like fatigue, headache and irritable mood by drinking enough water per day. You'll have more energy for your busy schedule or workout, and it will help boost your metabolism. Drink up; your body will thank you.
Save time during the week by planning your meals in advance. Organizing ingredients and planning ahead will not only save you time, but it will also help keep your diet on track. With recipes planned and ingredients readily available, you'll be less tempted to go out to eat or heat up frozen food.
Walk it out
Don't skip the stairs! Walk your way to better health. Don't want to do it by yourself? Make walking a family affair by taking a stroll around the block after dinner or on your day off. Fresh air and exercise will make you happier while also giving you an energy boost.
Quality time with kids
Make sibling rivalry a thing of the past by scheduling one-on-one time with each child. If you have more than one child, find a special activity to do with each kid and set aside a time without interruption to do it with them. This mommy-and-me time will make your child feel special and give you a chance to strengthen your bond.
Ask for help
You don't have to do it all alone; asking a friend or family member for a little help now and then will save you stress and time. You deserve a break and some "me time". Keep calm and stay healthy by taking some time out of your busy schedule to focus on improving your mental and physical wellbeing.
