Childhood Obesity Epidemic

Categories: Pediatrics

More than one-third of children and adolescents in the United States are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It's a growing problem. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years.

The below episode of Health Matters looks at the obesity problem among young people. Health Matters is a joint project between Doylestown Health and the Central Bucks School project. The show's panel includes pediatrician William Moore, DO, certified school nurse Carol Klein, RN, BSN, MEd and nutritionist Kristin Morrow, RD, LDN, CDE.

Childhood obesity is hurting the next generation and jeopardizing their future health. Children and adolescents who are obese are likely to be obese as adults. Childhood obesity is particularly troubling because the extra pounds often start children on the path to health problems that were once only experienced by adults, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

The panel offers tips for parents to help their children eat healthy and get – and stay – active. They discuss the importance of family mealtime and how to get youngsters to try new fruits and vegetables.
