Doylestown Hospital Earns ACR Accreditation for Breast MRI

Press Releases |

DOYLESTOWN – The American College of Radiology (ACR) recently awarded Doylestown Hospital a three-year term of accreditation in breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as the result of a recent review. MRI of the breast offers valuable information about many breast conditions that may not be obtained by other imaging modalities, such as mammography or ultrasound.

The ACR accreditation applies to Doylestown Hospital’s 3T MRI with Ambient Experience. The new 3T MRI with Ambient Experience combines the most advanced MRI technology available with enhanced features designed for patient comfort. Doylestown Hospital physicians began using the new 3T MRI in early 2014. The scanner was also recently awarded a separate accreditation for whole body imaging.

Doylestown Health offers MRI services in three locations: the ArtWalk at Doylestown Hospital, the Pavilion at Doylestown Hospital and the Health & Wellness Center in Warrington. All of these MRI scanners are accredited by the ACR.

MRI or magnetic resonance imaging lets doctors see inside a patient’s body to identify and diagnose a wide variety of possible medical conditions — all without exposure to X-rays. Instead, an MRI uses a powerful magnet, radio waves, and special coils to detect electrical signals from the body. A computer turns this information into detailed images doctors can use to help make a diagnosis. MRI provides much greater contrast between the different soft tissues of the body than computed tomography (CT) does, making it especially useful in neurological (brain), musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and oncological (cancer) imaging.

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement.

The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 36,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
