Recognition Acknowledges Important Strides in Use of Technology

Doylestown Hospital was recognized as one of the "Most Wired" hospitals in the nation, according to the results of the 2013 Most Wired Survey released in the July issue ofHospitals & Health Networksmagazine.

"Most Wired" hospitals have "deployed technologies that improve patient documentation, advance clinical decision support and evidence-based protocols, reduce the likelihood of medication errors, and rapidly restore access to data in the case of a disaster or outage," according toHospitals & Health Networks (H&HN). The Most Wired Survey focused on four main areas: Infrastructure; Business and administrative management; Clinical quality and safety, and Clinical integration.

Doylestown Hospital continues to make significant investments in information technology that improve patient safety and streamline processes involved in patient care. The Hospital achieved universal adoption of computerized provider order entry (CPOE) in June 2012, creating a fully electronic medical record.
Doylestown Hospital has strengthened its coordinated use of clinical data through a health information exchange called the Doylestown Clinical Network. Community physicians currently share critical patient information such as allergies, lab and diagnostic results, problem lists and medications via the Doylestown Clinical Network with the hospital and other practices. Community physicians also have a portal to access their patients' hospital record, including images in real time. For patients seen at Doylestown Hospital, that means records are shared automatically with a patient's primary physician.

"We are pleased with our recognition as among the 'Most Wired' hospitals in the U.S., but not satisfied that we have completed the work," said Richard Lang, Ed.D, vice president and chief information officer of Doylestown Hospital. "Information technology has potential in both the inpatient and outpatient settings to improve patient care and safety, and we continue our efforts to give patients and physicians access to critical health information."

The "Most Wired" status is the result of years of development and implementation of IT systems at Doylestown Hospital – beginning with patient bar-coding and electronic medication administration reconciliation, and now encompassing computerized provider order entry (CPOE) and the "meaningful use" of EHRs.

According to the survey, of the "Most Wired" hospitals:

  • 64% have either a pilot or fully rolled-out personal health record program
  • 69% of physician medication orders are done electronically, compared with 31% of all survey hospitals
  • 68% electronically manage care transition, compared with 50% of all survey hospitals
  • 41% have patient portals or web-base solution for patient-generated data, compared with 28% of all survey hospitals
  • 66% share patient discharge data with affiliated hospitals, compared with 49% of all survey hospitals

The 15th annual Health Care's Most Wired Survey was conducted by the American Hospital Association, the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives, AT&T and McKesson and polled 1,713 hospitals in the U.S.
