DVT Prevention During Travel

Health Articles |
Categories: Heart Vascular

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein in the body, usually the leg. The clot can prevent blood from flowing back to the heart. It can also break free and travel to a major organ, which is very dangerous. DVT can occur when traveling due to a lack of mobility for an extended period of time. The following are some tips that can help you prevent DVT.

Keep Moving

It is tough to move around on an airplane, especially if you are in the window seat and do not want to disturb your fellow passengers. Even so, a few polite “excuse me’s” are better than the alternative. Try to get up and use the restroom every two hours on a long flight. This gives you an excuse to move around. If traveling by car, stop every hour and walk around for a few minutes.

Compression Stockings

Compression stockings gently compress the leg muscles and reduce the risk of clots forming. Several studies of healthy people show that wearing compression stockings reduces the risk of DVT on long flights.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration causes blood vessels to thicken and constrict, increasing the risk for DVT. Drink plenty of water during your travels to reduce your risk for dehydration. Limit or abstain from coffee and alcohol consumption, as they dehydrate you.

Stuck in Your Seat?

Do not fret! Work the muscles in your legs while you sit.

  • Bend your feet
  • Curl and uncurl your toes
  • Extend your legs
