Five Socially Distanced Ways to Be Active This Fall

Family on a scenic fall walk

The end of summer doesn't have to mean the end of outdoor fitness. Instead, it signals the beginning of the fun, activity-filled fall season.

Don't let exercise drop off your to-do list when the leaves start falling. This autumn, more than ever, it is important to take advantage of the opportunity to exercise outdoors — and the Bucks and Montgomery County area offers plenty of activities to keep you and your family moving.

Here are five ways to stay active and enjoy the autumn season.

Walking

Beautiful Bucks County offers a great landscape for walking, especially in the fall. Studies have shown that walking briskly is a great way to get physical activity. It’s inexpensive, except for the cost of a sturdy and comfortable pair of sneakers, and you can do it just about anywhere.

The Doylestown Community Bike and Hike system includes 22 miles of trails and paths for walking or biking. The Bucks County Alive website offers a list of hiking and biking options regionally as well as the Delaware, Montgomery and Lehigh Counties and Mercer County, NJ, trails.

Benefits of walking include:

  • Lowers your blood pressure
  • Lowers cholesterol
  • Reduces risk of heart disease and stroke
  • Reduces risk of Type 2 diabetes
  • Strengthens your bones and muscles
  • Helps burn more calories
  • Increases energy and stamina
  • Elevates mood

Running

Interested in something a little speedier than strolling? Bucks County is home to lots of running enthusiasts, young and old, who can attest to the health benefits of running.

Studies have shown that running can help prevent:

  • Obesity
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Certain cancers

Biking

Perhaps two-wheel fun is more your speed. Biking in Bucks County is a great way to get physical activity (remember to wear a helmet!).

The health benefits of cycling include:

  • Increased heart health
  • Stronger muscles and more flexibility
  • Improved joint mobility
  • Decreased stress levels
  • Reduction in body fat

There are several bike organizations in the area, and lots of parks, paths and trails to keep you cycling throughout the fall.

Hiking

In addition to enjoying some great scenery, hiking in Bucks County is also a great way to get regular exercise. Physical activity like hiking can lower your blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease, help you lose weight, strengthen bones and elevate your mood. Features like hills and uneven terrain can give you even more of a work out.

Bucks County and Pennsylvania parks offer plenty of hiking trails for both the novice and advanced hiker.

Fly fishing

Unless you're reeling-in something really big, fishing might not make you sweat, but it is a great way for you and your family to remain active with plenty of socially distance opportunities. Hiking to a favorite fishing spot keeps you moving, and it's no secret that fishing, especially in a beautiful place like Bucks County, can be very relaxing.

You can find information online at the Bucks County Trout Unlimited website or the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat commission website.
