Staying active is key to maintain your health as you age. Learn about local opportunities to get fit and active.

Benefits of Exercise for Seniors

Whether you are an exercise enthusiast or you're looking to start a fitness program for the first time, being active can have great benefits for your health and well-being. According to the National Institutes of Health, exercise can help you:

  • Prevent or manage chronic illness
  • Remain independent
  • Maintain or lose weight
  • Improve strength
  • Improve balance or walking ability
  • Manage feelings of depression or anxiety
  • Maintain thinking skills

Getting Involved

Many local fitness clubs and facilities offer benefits like lower membership fees and special classes for older adults. In addition, seniors can take advantage of fitness programs subsidized by Medicare, such as Silver Sneakers or Silver & Fit. If you are looking for a more casual atmosphere, you can join a community program through your township or parks and recreation association, or start your own program with friends and family.

It is important to speak with your healthcare provider before starting any exercise program.

Exercise with Heart Disease & Cardiac Issues

If you currently have heart disease or have had a cardiac issue like a heart attack, valve surgery or stents, you can get involved in a medically-supervised exercise program like Cardiac Rehabilitation.

Cardiac Rehabilitation can help patients gradually and safely strengthen their heart through a supervised exercise program. In fact, patients who complete a cardiac rehab program can decrease their chance of another cardiac event by 30 to 50 percent.
