We are excited to open up the dialogue with you and our online community. We hope to keep you up to date on important happenings in the hospital and in health care. Our experts will inform you on a variety of topics, including wellness, prevention and innovations in medicine, and we'll offer glimpses inside the hospital to introduce you to the people who make Doylestown Hospital the unique place it is. Please let us know if there is anything in particular you'd like to hear about.
For now, while we celebrate the hospital's 90th anniversary, we take a moment to consider our past as well as our future. Just when it seems the world is changing faster than we can keep up, we are often reminded of how certain things – important things – remain the same.
For instance, we recently rededicated the Doylestown Hospital VIA Maternity Center. Coincidentally, the "reopening" of our birthing center is precisely 90 years after the Village Improvement Association first opened the doors of Doylestown Hospital with only eight beds on Oct. 9, 1923. One of the main purposes of the hospital was to provide a safe place for mothers to deliver their babies.
While some things may remain the same, there are always challenges. Healthcare reform is requiring that hospitals, doctors and health systems re-examine their role. Are they adequately focused on "health" care or "illness" care? It is a challenge to design a system of services that is both proactive in promoting health and yet is still responsive to patient needs when illness and disease are present.
At Doylestown Hospital, we're working to design and operate a healthcare system that addresses all the needs of our patients and their families. Our goal is to be a health system that is both relevant and indispensable to the communities we serve. I look forward to the important conversations we will have as we strive for this objective.
For almost 120 years, the mission of the VIA has focused on promoting health and meeting the needs of our communities. Sounds like our founders got it right from the beginning. It is our honor to maintain that legacy.
