During this season of gift giving, consider making a gift that can help save a life. There is always a need for blood donations.
It is a need that never ends. Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. On average, the Red Cross must collect about 15,000 pints of blood every day to meet the needs of patients at approximately 2,700 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country.
At Doylestown Hospital, an average of 350 units of red blood cells are transfused every month.
More than 1.6 million people were diagnosed with cancer last year. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment. A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood.
"You never know when it will be a family member, friend, co-worker or even you that needs blood," said Colin Riccobon, External Communications Manager for American Red Cross Blood Services. "By rolling up your sleeve, you can make a difference and help ensure that blood is available where it’s needed and when it’s needed."
The Red Cross estimates that 38% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate, but less than 10% actually do each year.
Blood Donor Eligibility Requirements:
- Be in good general health and feeling well
- Be at least 17 years old; In Pennsylvania, 16-year-olds can donate with parental consent
- Weigh at least 110 pounds; Additional weight requirements apply for donors 18-years-old and younger and all high school donors.
Remember, there is no man-made substitute for blood. It can only come from donors.
Usually during the holiday season, blood donations decline for a variety of reasons. They include holiday activities that conflict with donation appointments of regular donors; weather that forces cancellations of blood drives, and people may be sick this time of year and miss their donation appointments.
But the need for blood donations never decreases, even over the holidays. So think about giving blood. One donation can help save the lives of up to three people. Visit the local Red Cross site for information about upcoming drives in our area.
Doylestown Hospital hosts several blood drives throughout the year. Associates, volunteers and community members give regularly at these drives. The next drive is scheduled for January 9.
