The wives of the doctors on staff at Doylestown Hospital have a long history of working together to benefit our patients and their families. In 1965, a group chaired by Elizabeth Willard began meeting informally to determine how to best support the growing hospital. By 1968, the group had organized itself more formally as the Doctors' Wives of Doylestown Hospital. Their goal was to raise money to purchase new medical equipment and improve hospital services. Over the years, the group's special fundraisers included Hospital Day at Peddler's Village, amusement rides at the Village Fair and the annual spring luncheon and fashion show.
In 1993, the Doctors' Wives of Doylestown Hospital changed its name to the Medical Staff Auxiliary. Since its inception, the Medical Staff Auxiliary has given nearly $300,000 to support key initiatives of Doylestown Health.
A History of Support
"We value the important contributions of the Medical Staff Auxiliary throughout their history," said Doylestown Health CEO Jim Brexler. "Here is another example of how a determined group of women can impact medical care in their community. Their donations funded the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment and helped expand services for our patients and families. The Auxiliary is an important thread in the fabric of our history."
Joan Parlee is a founding member of the group and wife of retired radiologist Donald Parlee, MD, a member of the Doylestown Hospital Medical Staff from 1965 to 2008.
"I have been fortunate to be involved with Doylestown Hospital in so many different capacities over the years," shares Joan, an active member of the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown (VIA). "The various organizations that have supported the hospital through the years share a common goal - ensuring the highest quality care is available to our community."
Now, as incoming Board Chair for both the Doylestown Hospital and Doylestown Health Foundation Boards of Directors, Joan is uniquely positioned to continue her role as both advocate and fundraiser in support of the mission of Doylestown Health.
In this new role, Joan was pleased to present Doylestown Hospital with a final gift of support from the Medical Staff Auxiliary.
"This contribution will be designated to help us recognize our Associates," stated Jim Brexler. "Our Medical Staff and Associates are our most valued commodity and we are pleased to have this added opportunity to demonstrate our appreciation for their commitment to patient care and the overall mission of Doylestown Health."
