Cardiac rehabilitation is a medically-supervised exercise and education program for patients who have had stents, heart attacks, bypass or valve surgery and heart failure. It is also for cardiac patients who want to slow down, stop, reverse or manage their heart disease.
Dealing with a diagnosis of heart disease or recovering from a cardiac event can be difficult. While you will need to make some important changes in your life, they don't have to overwhelm you. Our Cardiac Rehab program is designed to help you
- Gradually and safely condition your heart
- Increase your heart function
- Achieve a heart-healthy lifestyle
Benefits of Cardiac Rehabilitation
Participate in cardiac rehab to manage your risks and help avoid another cardiac event.
- Cardiac rehab is as beneficial as taking cholesterol and heart medications.
- Patients who complete 36 sessions of cardiac rehab lower their chance of another cardiac event and mortality by 30 to 50 percent.
Four Steps to a Healthy Heart
Doylestown Hospital's comprehensive Cardiac Rehab program consists of four simple phases to help you manage your condition.
Phase 1 (Inpatient Rehab) at Doylestown Hospital
Our Cardiovascular ICU provides one-on-one personal care. Our open heart surgery patients receive two to four exercise sessions each day. We educate you about all appropriate topics so that whenyou are discharged you feel comfortable about your home care. A nurse will call you at home to check on your progress. We create an exercise program tailored to your needs. You will participate in a range of motion exercises, walking and stairclimbing. All our bypass and valve surgery patients are discharged from the hospital with an exercise plan and a date to start outpatient cardiac rehab. If you live in another region, we will give you information about cardiac rehab programs in your area.

Phase 2 (Outpatient EKG-Monitored Rehab) at Doylestown Hospital
When you begin Phase 2 depends on your diagnosis. Your cardiologist will clear you to participate in cardiac rehab at a follow-up appointment after your procedure.Once you are cleared, you will have a one-on-one orientation session. This is followed by your first exercise assessment. You will receive ongoing one-on-one education sessions. Your goal is to complete 36 monitored Phase 2 sessions. We set up a final one-on-one appointment and review your progress, assess your risk factors and set new goals, plans and interventions. Many patients choose to continue cardiac rehab with a Phase 3 program at the Health & Wellness Center.
