Lymphedema Therapy

Doylestown Health’s Lymphedema Management program was developed to help patients who are experiencing lymphedema. Lymphedema is a permanent condition that develops when fluid collects in tissues and results in chronic swelling (edema). There is no cure for lymphedema, but with treatment patients can see a reduction in swelling and discomfort.

Factors that increase risk of lymphedema include:

Axillary Web Syndrome (Cording)

Another complication that can occur as a result of surgery is Axillary Web Syndrome (cording). This is a ropelike structure under the skin, most commonly found in the upper arm.

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain
  • Tightness in the armpit or shoulder
  • Difficulty raising the arm overhead
  • Feeling a pulling sensation down the arm when reaching overhead

Lymphedema Treatment

Lymphedema is best managed if treated early. Tell your doctor or nurse immediately if you experience any symptoms of lymphedema.

Symptoms of Lymphedema

  • Pain
  • Cording
  • Swelling
  • Heaviness
  • Achiness
  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Fatigue

About Our Program

Doylestown Health’s certified lymphedema therapists are specially trained in comprehensive lymphedema management.  Our program uses complete decongestive therapy (CDT), the internationally preferred approach used to treat lymphedema. Our team emphasizes self-care and will teach you how to manage your lymphedema.

Complete decongestive therapy (CDT) includes:

  • Manual lymphatic drainage
  • Compression bandaging
  • Therapeutic exercises
  • Compression garments
  • Skin care

The Lymphedema Management program works in close collaboration with Doylestown Health’s Cancer Institute, which is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and a member of Jefferson’s Sidney Kimmel Cancer Network.

Insurance Information

Doylestown Health participates in most major insurance plans. Our staff will assist you with checking your insurance prior to your first appointment. A physician’s prescription is required.
