Breast Biopsy

Breast Biopsy

If a lump in your breast requires further examination, your physician may order a breast biopsy. Computerized imaging equipment allows radiologists to perform breast biopsies quickly and painlessly.

Doylestown Health's Women's Diagnostic Centers offer the following types of breast biopsy:

  • Ultrasound-guided minimally invasive breast biopsy: This procedure allows radiologists to perform breast biopsies quickly, painlessly and accurately using ultrasound for guidance. Small sections of suspicious tissue are sampled during the biopsy.
  • Stereotactic breast biopsy: This procedure uses X-ray and computer technology to pinpoint and analyze the abnormal area and to insert a fine needle to extract suspicious tissue. This is often done to biopsy tiny calcium deposits when no mass can be felt or seen on an ultrasound. Computerized imaging equipment allows radiologists to perform the breast biopsy quickly and painlessly. Stereotactic breast biopsy is as accurate as traditional surgical biopsy, but it decreases the amount of tissue removed for diagnosis and minimizes any scarring to the breast.
  • MRI-guided minimally invasive breast biopsy: The most advanced technology available, this procedure allows radiologists to perform breast biopsies accurately using MRI for guidance.

A physician's order is required for breast biopsy. Managed care patients also require a referral for certain studies.
