Doylestown Hospital’s Pharmacy Residency Program Receives Official Accreditation

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists accreditation raises the bar of an already rigorous program.

Doylestown Hospital’s Pharmacy Postgraduate Year 1 (PGY1) residency program has earned accreditation by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) for its high standards in pharmaceutical care. Additionally, ASHP granted the accreditation for the maximum allowable timeframe: eight years, which is reserved for programs that uphold the highest level of care according to ASHP standards.

“We're thrilled that our Post Graduate Residency program was granted the maximum eight-year accreditation by ASHP. This is a testament to our team at Doylestown Health, and shows the level of pharmacy services that we provide as a unit,” says Dr. Lindsay Gladysz, Pharmacy Residency program director and clinical pharmacist.

The Patient Safety Connection

Doylestown Hospital is consistently recognized, both regionally and nationally, as a leader in patient safety. Our pharmacists play a critical role in the achievement of this distinction by proactively monitoring orders and ensuring that each medicine used is evidence-based, with more than 100,000 doses of medication dispensed each month.

“Medications must be 100% accurate, and our pharmacy team is responsible for tracking and dispensing over 3,000 different medications,” says Dr. Scott Levy, chief medical officer, Doylestown Health. “Being an early adopter of medication barcode tracking — deployed at Doylestown Hospital in 2007 — is one striking example.”

At our hospital, 34 pharmacists provide care across a variety of settings and specialties: cardiology, emergency medicine, intensive care, infectious diseases, internal medicine, long term care, transitions of care, oncology and outpatient infusion, pharmacy informatics, pharmacy operations, and investigational drugs.

Importance of ASHP Accreditation

The ASHP accreditation is significant as only 17% of hospitals host postgraduate pharmacist training programs — making Doylestown Hospital part of this exclusive group achieving and maintaining superior standards of pharmaceutical care.

“While pharmacists graduate with doctorate degrees, some choose to push their knowledge and passion for patient care to a higher level through postgraduate training programs like ours,” explains Dr. Christine Roussel, senior executive director of Pharmacy, Laboratory, and Medical Research. “Their passion and ideas also help push the pharmacy profession forward.”

Our Pharmacy Residency program became an integral part of the pharmacy department when it began in 2021, says Dr. Gladysz. “It allows us to provide better care of our community, while also immersing our resident pharmacists into impactful learning opportunities that improve them as health care professionals,” she explains.

“High quality of care is what Doylestown Health is known for. Our Pharmacy Residency being accredited by the ASHP illustrates this,” Dr. Levy adds.

The Pharmacy Residency program is possible because of the generosity of Jim and Jean Clark through their leadership gift to ONE VISION: The Campaign for Doylestown Health. Jim, a former hospital pharmacist, and his wife, Jean, a former educator, were inspired to support the pharmacy residency because it combines their lifelong passion for pharmacy and education.
