Pain Management

Pain Management

Pain management physicians evaluate, diagnose and treat pain. Most often, a patient is referred to a pain management expert through a primary care physician or surgeon.

Pain can be related to injury, cancer, surgery, fibromyalgia, nerve damage, arthritis and other common conditions. Sometimes, pain occurs with no apparent cause.

Types of Pain

  • Acute: Sudden and with a specific cause.
  • Chronic: Ongoing, usually lasting more than six months.

Pain Management Options

Your physician will tailor your treatment to your needs. Options may include:

  • Medications such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, steroids, anti-inflammatory medications, anti-depressants, medical marijuana or narcotics
  • Botox for migraines and headaches
  • Nerve blocks, an injection of a numbing medication to relieve pain
  • Lifestyle changes, such as exercise and weight loss
  • Interventional pain management, administering injections of pain relieving medications, often with live x-ray guidance for increased accuracy and safety
  • Physical therapy
