The services provided by your primary care physician include health promotion, counseling, and patient education, as well as disease prevention, health maintenance, and the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses.

Your primary care provider also serves as your advocate within the healthcare system, coordinating care provided by other medical specialists if the need arises. For example, a primary care physician may refer a patient with a heart concern to a cardiologist, and then coordinate services with the cardiologist in the best interest of the patient.
