Oral and maxillofacial surgery is surgical specialty dedicated to correcting a wide spectrum of diseases, injuries and defects of the head, neck, face, jaws, including the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region.

Surgery performed on the craniomaxillofacial complex, consisting of the skull, mouth, jaws, neck, face, and surrounding tissues, such as nerves and muscles, may include:

  • Surgery to remove impacted teeth, tooth extractions, bone grafting or preprosthetic surgery to provide better anatomy for the placement of implants, dentures
  • Surgery to remove benign cysts or malignant tumors
  • Reconstructive surgery after treatment for head and neck cancer
  • Surgery to treat congenital craniofacial malformations such as cleft lip and palate
  • Diagnosis and treatment of dysgnathia (incorrect bite), and orthognathic (straight bite) reconstructive surgery
  • Diagnosis and treatment of soft and hard tissue trauma of the oral and maxillofacial region
  • Surgery to insert osseointegrated (bone fused) dental implants and Maxillofacial implants for attaching craniofacial prostheses and bone anchored hearing aids
  • Diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders
